WINDOWS 101

Windows are one of the most complicated and interesting elements in residential building design. Windows connect interior spaces with the outdoors, provide the many benefits of light, and invite in fresh air. However, windows also represent a major source of unwanted heat loss and heat gain, a major factor in both increased energy cost and human comfort. In recent years, remarkably advanced technologies have transformed the energy efficiency performance of window products.

Aside from individual stylistic considerations in making a window purchasing decision, there are some common technical considerations that most buyers must address to make an effective choice. These technical priorities can be organized into two general categories: Energy Performance and Durability. Our Windows 101 section will serve to introduce the concepts included in these two categories. The information was compiled utilizing textbooks, scientific journal articles, and trade publications.
